Frequently Asked Questions

What is CourseCasting? - CourseCasting is a way to take the lecture with you wherever you go. Based on Podcasting technology, CourseCasting gives you the ability to listen to lectures or supplemental material from participating courses. Students will find NATC CourseCasting a complement to their studies and the community is also invited to listen and learn with us. In addition to classroom recordings, NATC CourseCasting also features recordings of campus activities such as poetry readings, lecture series, special topics etc.

What is RSS? - RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

How do I subscribe to a CourseCast? You can easily subscribe to a Coursecast, even if you do not have an RSS reader. Outlook 2007 and IE7 have their own built-in readers and it is very easy to subscribe through either one. If you add a feed in one, it appears in both. You will need to go into each separately, however, to delete feeds. Access the handout on adding feeds in Outlook 2007 or IE7; or, view the online tutorial for Outlook 2007 or the online tutorial for IE7.  If you are not using Outlook 2007 or IE7 or higher, then you will need to access the handout on how to subscribe to a free RSS Reader.

Do I have to subscribe in order to access the materials? - No, all CourseCasts are available for access right through the CourseCast portal web page.  Subscribing to the RSS feed is just one way to access this content.

Who has access? - Currently there are no restrictions on who can access materials through the CourseCasting portal.  However, in the future, some classes may choose to restrict access to a limited group of people (such as the students who are enrolled in their classes).

Do I need an iPod to access NATC CourseCasts? - No, CourseCasting is non-platform specific.

What types of files are included in CourseCasts? - Nicolet's CourseCasting program offers the ability to access multiple types of digital material.  This includes audio, video, attachments such as Powerpoint or Word documents and even links to web sites.

Why aren't all classes available through CourseCasting? - The decision to CourseCast is entirely up to the instructor.  We anticipate expanding the program over time to include more instructors and classes.

What is the difference between streaming and download? - To access a streaming file, you must be connected to the Internet while listening/watching that file.  Downloading allows you to save the file locally to your computer and allows you to transfer to your portable device for use at a later time.

Why are some files only available in streaming format? - Currently videos are only available in streaming format.  It is the instructor's decision as to what format they wish to distribute their audio files.

How do I use the digitial audio recorder? - The digital audio recorders we have for checkout in the library are simple to use. We have provided this handout to show you everything you need to know.

How do I use the digitial video recorder? - The digital video recorders we have for checkout in the library are simple to use. We have provided this handout to show you everything you need to know.
